Justice For Gonzalez and Other Vets
By: Mark W Adams

No, not Abu Gitmo, our disgraceful former (thank goodness) Attorney General. Eduardo Gonzalez, Petty Officer Second Class, USN, on station in Iraq -- for the third time -- whose wife is about to be deported. His son, born in the U.S., is in the care of his wife, who has until next Summer to change her status or be subject to deportation to Guatemala.

That's right. He's fighting the terrorists over there so we don't have to put up with his wife over here.

Eduardo, originally from Mexico and his young son are both U.S. citizens. His wife, Mildred came here with her mother as war refugees from Guatemala in 1989 when she was 5 years old. Her mother was granted legal resident status in 2004 and included her daughter in the application she filed in 2000. Six weeks before the application was approved, Mildred married Eduardo, cancelling her status under her mother's application.

A judge in June granted her a one-year extension to remain in the United States. If her legal status does not change by June 8, 2008, she will have 60 days to voluntarily leave the country or face deportation.

That's just fine, according to Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which lobbies for tougher laws on illegal immigration.

"What you're talking about is amnesty for illegal immigrants who have a relative in the armed forces, and that's just outrageous," he said. "What we're talking about here is letting lawbreakers get away with their actions just because they have a relative in the military. ... There's no justification for that kind of policy."

With all due respect Mr. Krikorian, you're a fuckwad. Did you ever hear of War Brides? Someone decides to turn their life over to the U.S. Military, that sir justifies an expectation that the government they're risking their life for won't screw with their family.

Dr. Frank nails it:

Is it too much to ask for an ounce of common sense and decency in our INS? Evidently it is, if you ask the Center for Jackass Xenophobes Immigration Studies.

Frank also has a "Modest Proposal"

Take all the minutemen and anti-immigration guys who are champing at the it to "defend" the border, pack 'em up, and let them go serve in uniform. On the front line.

Sounds about right. No doubt when Gonzalez comes back home, he'll have another slap in the face waiting for him, like these guys who were expecting to claim their earned educational benefits under the GI Bill:

The MN National Guard was deployed for 729 days, apparently - the
longest tour of duty of any ground combat unit. However, in order to
qualify for benefits, troops must be ordered into combat for a total of
730 days. Members of the unit contend that their orders were
deliberately written so that they would not qualify.
