When the history of the Iraq War is written, and our grandchildren try to to explain to their grandchildren why they are still paying for this disaster that brought down the greatest nation the world has ever seen, all they need to do is point them at this blog post called Operation Desert Snipe, by Cogent Provocateur, something Jim Henley at Unqualified Offerings calls The Greatest Blog Post of All Time.
It not only charts the "collective self-deception" about WMD's that put us there, but for something written April Fools Day of 2003, it was remarkably prescient in predicting that there would be an attempt to at least "plant" evidence of WMD's in Iraq -- something apparently foiled by Valerie Plame's old CIA cover outfit, Brewster-Jennings -- and singling out Judith Miller's brethless reporting on the snipe hunt itself. Two ladies we'd hear so much more about later.
On Miller, we find this delightfully "cogent" opinion:
Only a prize-winning, best-selling subject-matter specialist could get a piece like this printed in the Podunk Herald. Miller is a journalistic rock star -- deservedly so -- but she's stuck in the desert, holding the bag, waiting for the snipe, while a goddamn real biological terror -- SARS -- bounces around the globe. In short, this report walks like a fish, quacks like a fish, and smells like a fish.Take a walk down memory lane and archive this post for later use. Your progeny deserve truth.
